Why Leave A Will

Writing a Will lays out exactly what you want to leave your friends and family – without one intestacy laws decide who gets what from your estate. Writing a Will is easier than you think, it ensures your loved ones are looked after and will make things simpler for them at a difficult time.

Leaving a Will can also help causes you hold dear to continue to transform lives long into the future.

You Can Help The Next Generation Of Refugees

Remembering Reading Refugee Support Group in your Will can give hope to the next generation of refugees in Berkshire.

We’ve spent over 25 years helping refugees in Berkshire, and our aim is to be here for refugees long into the future. Every year, hundreds of men, women and children reach Berkshire having faced unimaginable horrors and escaped from war, violence and persecution. Many have been trafficked or were victims of modern slavery.

We offer them a safe space, practical support, education and social activities to help them get back on their feet and rebuild their lives here in Berkshire.

By remembering Reading Refugee Support Group with a gift in your Will, no matter what size, you can help us give that lifeline for years to come, to the men, women and children who need Reading Refugee Support Group.

What Your Gift Can Mean

Each year hundreds of refugees need our support in Berkshire, and that number continues to grow.

Leaving a gift in your will can help us continue successful programmes like our Drop In Centre that allows refugees to feel less isolated and improve their mental health. It could fund our football team that aids refugees in making friends through sport, or our Homework Club that helps children achieve their potential at school.

A Legacy gift could even enable us to create new projects that will touch people’s lives in new ways and help them succeed.

Our Promise To You

  • Your Will is personal and we will never ask you to tell us your decision (although we’d love to have the opportunity to say thank you).
  • We understand that family and friends always come first.
  • We will never put you under any pressure – it’s your decision to make in your own time.
  • If you choose to remember RRSG in your will, we will use your gift carefully so it achieves the greatest impact for the families and communities we work with.
  • You can change your mind at any time.

How To Leave A Gift In Your Will

You may feel you don’t have much to leave in your will, but any gift, whatever its size, really is priceless and can have a massive impact on the next generation of Refugees in Berkshire.

If you don’t already have a Will, we advise you to consult a solicitor so that a legal document can be drawn up that clearly states your wishes. They will charge you a fee, but it will be considerably less than the legal costs your loved ones could face if you do not leave a Will.

When you’ve decided who you want to include in your Will, there are three types of gifts you might consider leaving to RRSG:

The Types Of Gifts You Can Leave In Your Will

A Share of Your Estate (A Residuary Gift)

After sorting any debts and legal costs, the remainder of your estate is called the Residue. Once you’ve taken care of your loved ones, you can choose to leave a share of this to charity. Even a small percentage can make a huge difference, and the value doesn’t decrease over time.

A Specific Sum (A Pecuniary Gift)

This is when you leave a fixed sum of money. The value of that sum can fall over time because of inflation, so you can revise this from time-to-time according to your wishes.

A Specific Gift

This could be something valuable such as an antique, property, or shares.

Whatever type of gift you choose, it will transform the lives of the next generation of refugees trying to get back on their feet.

Sample Phrasing

Your solicitor will advise you on suitable wording to include a gift to RRSG, but here’s our suggested form:

I give free of inheritance tax to Reading Refugee Support Group, Registered Charity Number: 1098058, of 1st Floor, RISC, 35-39 London Street, Reading RG1 4PS,
 _____________________________________________
[insert the details of your gift here e.g. 10% of the residue of my estate]
to be used for its general charitable purposes. I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or duly authorised officer at RRSG shall be a full and sufficient discharge for my executors.

What To Do If You Have Already Made A Will

If you’ve already made a Will, but want to leave a gift to Reading Refugee Support Group, you can do so easily by adding a Codicil form to your Will. Ask your solicitor about a Codicil form, or contact us and we can send you one.

Once completed, keep your Will and any Codicils in a safe place, and let your Executors know where they are. Let your family know if you’ve included Reading Refugee Support Group in your will.
