Lockdown Activities

Tuesdays   Wednesdays   Thursdays   Pop-Up English Casework

Mondays - Digital Drop In - 10.30am-11.30am

Social interaction is really important, so we are continuing our Monday Drop Ins online.

You are welcome any time during the hour to catch up with everyone and have a chat.

You can also have a private discussion with a caseworker using a virtual breakout room.

These sessions will start on 20th April 2020 and happen every week until lockdown restrictions lift.

You will need to download Zoom on your computer or mobile phone here: https://zoom.us/

Tuesdays - Lockdown Drama Group (Adults) - 4pm-5pm

We are having fun reading plays and learning voice projection and physical acting skills to help build confidence and communication. There are some great plays out there and we think that there is plenty of common ground in the scripts that we have found.

If you would like to take part, email Jude at jude@rrsg.org.uk and she will send you a link to join the group.

Thursdays - Lockdown Drama Group (Juniors) - 4pm-5pm

In the absence of homework club we really hope more of the families with children will sign up to drama games and fun. A great way to develop language skills, be brave and try new things!

One-to-One Pop-up English Support

The One-to-one Pop-up English Support programme involves informal English language sessions between volunteer tutors and a refugee, set in the community environment. Though the primary goal is to improve the language skills of refugees, the initiative also strives to reduce isolation and loneliness and promote social integration. It is funded by the Controlling Migration Government Fund. Tutors and tutees are matched based on availability, location and preferences and are asked to commit to at least 10 sessions, usually once a week. The sessions are to take place at participating Coffee Shop Banks, or other significant locations such as libraries, museums, gardens etc., with the view of helping tutees get to navigate their home town whist learning English by immersion in the community environment. The initiative is implemented jointly by Reading Refugee Support Group and Reading City of Sanctuary.

During the period of social distancing, sessions have actively been taking place online using platforms such as Zoom and Skype. It has been beneficial for both clients and our isolating volunteers, and has brought additional flexibility to sessions.

Casework Support - 11am-3pm Daily

If you need practical help or confidential advice, our caseworkers are available from 11am - 3pm, Monday to Friday.
If you need to make an appointment with one of our Caseworkers, please email caseworker@rrsg.org.uk and we will make an appointment for you to speak to someone on the phone or using Zoom.
